2011 All County Golf Presentation
Coach of the Year -
Jose Ortiz has been the head golf coach at River Dell since 1990, 22 seasons. He owns a career coaching record in the sport of 453-115-1. Those 453 wins are the most all-time for a single sport in the history of River Dell Athletics. Coach Ortiz has led the Hawks to eleven, 20 or more win seasons, 2 seasons of 30 or more wins and 20 of his 22 seasons at the helm have resulted in winning records including the last 14 consecutively. In 2007 his team won the Group II State Championship with a record of 25-1 and was ranked #6 in the state of NJ. His teams have won 4 North I & II State Sectional titles and have been ranked among the state Top 20 several times. Nine times his teams won the BCSL-American title and this year his 22-4 squad tied with Tenafly for the first Big North Conference, Patriot Division title. This year’s team also won the Odell Nassar small school county championship and has been named the County’s small school Team of the Year. Coach Ortiz is a member of the NJSCA Hall of Fame.
Group 1/2 Non Public B – River Dell
A pre-season pick for 3rd place in the tough Patriot division of the Big North, this team played its best in the clutch situations to earn this prestigious award. River Dell tied for the division championship with an 11 – 1 record and finished with an overall record of 22 – 4. They culminated their season by winning the Odell Nassar Bergen County Championship for Groups I,II, and non public B with a score of 311 at Darlington. Seniors Thomas Barnes, Stephen Osterlof and Anthony Gagliostro will leave their imprint in River Dell golf history as they graduate with a four year record of 87 wins and 12 defeats.
Group 3/4 Non Public A – Bergen Catholic
The Bergen Catholic Golf Team finished its season with a 25-0 record. This year the Crusaders won the Blue Devil Invitational, the FDU Tournament, the Arcola Invitational and the Garden State Cup, which had a field of twenty-five teams many ranked in the top ten in the State. BC finished second in the Big North Team Championship, came in second in The Odell Nassar Bergen County Team Championship and second in the North Non Public “A” State qualifier. In the State Tournament of Champions, the Crusaders finished a strong second out of twenty-four teams with a team score of 300. The team also won the first Big North United Division League Title going undefeated. The team was lead by Harrison Shih and Erick Alonso, first team All County selections with Matt Love and Sean O’Neill, second team All County selections and Peter Repetto honorable mention. Sophomore Ryan Rose was named second team All League Big North United Division, and Senior Kevin Smyth and Freshman Zach Egermayer were honorable mention Big North United Division. The team was ranked #2 in the State by the Star Ledger Newspaper. They were ranked #1 in The Record’s final poll, a position they held all year. This marks the twenty-ninth year that the Crusaders have won or shared this award since its inception.
Cole Meitner – Don Bosco Prep
Cole is a three year varsity letterman for Don Bosco. He was 1st team all league and all county in 2010. He also won the Luciano Championship in 2010. This year, Cole led Don Bosco to a 20-2 team record, with a 9-hole average this season of 36.6 and an individual match record of 17-0-1. Throughout the season he played in the garden state cup, 78 (top ten), FDU invitational, 73 (tied for 1st & lost in playoff) and led his team to the following wins: big north division day, 68 (medalist and low for entire big north), league championship, 34 (medalist), Luciano/Nasser Bergen County County Championship, 72 (medalist), new jersey sectional tournament, 72 (medalist and low round among all groups) and New Jersey State Tournament Of Champions, 75. Cole was recently named first team all state by the new jersey pga, and the star ledger. He was also just named North Jersey golfer of the year by the record. Cole will be taking his golf game to Miami of Ohio university next year.
THOMAS BARNES – RIVER DELL
A senior, playing his 4th year on the varsity, Thomas was a unanimous selection to the First Team for the second consecutive year. Thomas is a complete player who hits the ball and has great touch around the greens. He had a 37.8 average and in the four major tournaments shot 69, 73, 72, and 76. He became the 3rd River Dell player in the last 5 years to win the Dan Luciano individual County Championship with a one over par 72. He is a model of consistency as he played 19 rounds of 39 or under. Thomas’ honesty, good sportsmanship and great leadership make him a terrific role model to the younger members of the team. Next year he will play at Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University on a full scholarship
LUKE EDELMAN – SADDLE RIVER DAY
Luke is a three time First Team All County Selection as well as a two time All State selection. This year Luke averaged 37.5 during the season and helped Saddle River Day to a 21-1 season. The team has won three straight league titles and three league tournament titles in Luke’s three seasons. They have a current League streak of 50 and 0 since 2009. This season Luke was NJIC low medalist at the league tournament and was low medalist at the Non Public State Sectionals. He finished 1st in the Non Public B Tournament of Champions and tied 6th overall. He returns next year to finish his senior year at Saddle River Day.
HARRISON SHIH – BERGEN CATHOLIC
Harrison Shih, a junior and team captain, was 15-2-1 with a 37.2 stroke average and repeats as a First Team All County selection. He finished fourth in The Luciano/Nassar County Tournament with a 74 and came in seventh by shooting a 78 in the Big North League Tournament. Harrison placed third in the Blue Devil Invitational shot 71 at The Garden State Cup leading the team to titles in both events. He shot a 76 in the Non- Public “A” North sections helping the team qualify for the State Championship. Harrison saved his best for the States as he shot a 67 for first place in the Non- Public “A” State Finals and finished first overall at The Tournament of Champions becoming only the fourth Bergen Catholic player to accomplish this feat. He shot 39 or less thirteen times, with a low round of 35 on the back nine of Essex County Country Club. In five High School Major Tournaments, Harrison averaged 73.2 with scores of 71, 78, 76, 74 and 67. Harrison only a junior was named First Team All State by the New Jersey PGA. Harrison also was named First Team All State by the Star Ledger and he was named Player of the Year.
ERICK ALONSO – BERGEN CATHOLIC
Erick Alonso, a freshman, was 15-0 with a 37.2 stroke average and this is his first experience as a First Team All County selection. Erick finished sixth in the Blue Devil Invitational and he shot a 78 for eighth place in the Garden State Cup leading the team to wins in both events. Erick won the inaugural FDU Tournament with a 73. He was one of only four players that shot in the 70′s at the Galloway National Invitational and he shot a 75 at Non-Public “A” North sections as the Crusaders qualified for the State Championship. Erick carded a 71 in the Big North League Tournament at Valley Brook Golf Course finishing in second place in The United Division. He shot 75 in the Non Public “A” States tied for fourth and in the Tournament of Champions Erick tied for thirteenth overall with a 75. Erick shot 39 or less ten times in matches this year with a low round of 33 at High Mountain Golf Course. In seven High School Major Tournaments, Erick averaged 76.2 with scores of 78, 73, 79, 71, 75, 83 and 75. Erick was named Third Team All State by the New Jersey PGA and Third Team All State by the Star Ledger.
Todd Havill – Don Bosco Prep
Todd has been athree year varsity letterman for Don Bosco. He was Recently named a 2011 Don Bosco Prep Ironmen Award recipient. He has Been selected 1st team all league in 2009, 2010 and 2011. He was also Selected 2ndteam all county in 2009. His 9 hole scoring average is 37.5, and he has an individual match record of 16-1. He led the team to a 20-2 record and the following wins:
- Big North Division Day (low team score for entire division) – 38
- Odell Nasser Bergen County Championship – 76
- New Jerseystate Sectional Qualifier – 75 (3RD PLACE)
- Tied For 5th At Nj State Tournament Of Champions (all groups) – 78
Todd will be attending Boston College University
TOM LAMORTE – NV – DEMAREST
Tom La Morte is a Freshman at Northern Valley Demarest. He earned the #1 spot on the team during the season. He was the leading scorer on the team with a 9-hole average of 38.6. This average was actually lower for 18 hole tournaments. Tom shot a 1-under par 69 in Big North Tournament (Tied for second overall). He also shot a 78 in State Sectionals (good for third place). And he shot a 74 in the Tournament of Champions (3rd place in Group III). This earned Tom 1st Team All League as well as First Team All County honors. Not Bad, and consider he is only a freshman. Tom returns for his sophomore year at Northern Valley Demarest looking to lead the Norsemen.
HYUNG MO KIM – NV – OLD TAPPAN
Hyung Mo Kim started playing golf at the age of nine. He began playing competitively at the age of 12 and he continues to do so today. Hyung Mo has been the #1 golfer all four of his years playing for Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan. He received the Doug Meeks award as Old Tappan’s best golfer for all four years of his high school career. Hyung Mo is an avid golfer with an excellent work ethic; he spends countless hours at the range and on the golf course. Hyung Mo was also voted to the All County team as a sophomore, and received a 2nd team nomination as a junior and honorable mention as a freshman. His accomplishments include being voted All League all four year of his high school career and being voted McDonald’s player of the month during his sophomore year. Hyung Mo will continue playing golf next year on a partial scholarship at Rutgers University where he will study Accounting. Hyung Mo will be sorely missed by the members of the Old Tappan golf team; they all wish him the best in his future endeavors.
