There is something about the Region wrestling tournaments I always liked, something about the hope every wrestler has going into it that make me and them think the possibilities are endless. It’s almost like spring training for baseball teams: right now everyone thinks there going to win it all.

Well, tonight, that dream ends for a lot of these kids.

The Region wrestling tournaments start today with the opening rounds being contested around North Jersey. Whoever placed second or third at districts will be wrestling today with their season on the line.

Win and they’re in the main draw at regions. Lose and the season is over.

For more on this, including the Region preview boxes for today and the top state title contenders, read below.

The schedule for tonight’s region opener and what to watch for is in The Record’s region previews. For all the info on Region 1, Region 2 and Region 4 click here.

While the Region tournaments haven’t even start yet, I still think it’s fun to look ahead to the state tournament. North Jersey has some serious talent this year and I’m hoping the area brings back a few gold medals after failing to bring one home last year. With that in mind, I want to break down the top 10 wrestlers who I think have the best chance to win a state title this year.

10-Nick Gravina, Northern Highlands, 145

9-Evan Ramos, Hawthorne, 170

8-Mike Spencer, Pequannock, 285

7-Anthony Giraldo, North Bergen, 120

6-Eric McMullen, North Bergen, 195

5-Pelal Deeb, Passaic Tech, 152: Deeb surprised a lot of people by staying at 152 pounds for his final run at a state title. He told me a month ago that he would drop to 145 for states. But maybe he thought 152 would offer an easier road through Region 4, because now he won’t have to face Rutherford’s Mike Paskas or St. Peter’s Alex Richardson. I doubt Deeb was thinking like that–the kid love competition, a big reason he bumped up to face Sebastian and beat him–but now the reality is this: If Deeb wants to win a state title, he’s going to have to beat the top guy on this list.

4-Connor Melde, Bergen Catholic, 132: Since suffering a concussion early in the year, Melde has slowly been regaining the form that made him a two-time state fourth. It takes a while to get back into wrestling shape, and Melde seems to be peaking at the right time. He cruised to the District 7 title with a pin and tech fall and should be feeling good heading into Regions. He could face Emerson/Park Ridge senior Steve Schneider in the regions finals in what would be a good test to see where he is heading into the state tournament.

3-Luis Gonzalez, North Bergen, 113: I like Gonzalez a lot right now and was tempted to move him up a spot. His offensive abilities are clearly better than they ever have been and his defense is still second to none. He should cruise to his second region title and probably wont get truly tested until the state tournament. But he’s wrestled enough to know when to turn it on, and I believe now is the time he does.

2- Johnny Sebastian, Bergen Catholic, 160: Sebastian is on a collision course with Glen Rock/Saddle Brook senior Matt Dickman for the Region 2 final. Dickman upset Sebastian in the region finals last year and is the two-time defending champ. But Sebastian has beaten Dickman at the BCCA twice. The two are going to renew their rivalry at least one more time in the region 2 final and whoever wins will have the inside track to the state tournament with a higher seed and a bye in the first round. Whoever loses will make it harder on themselves to win a state title. Should be interesting to see who emerges.

1-Sal Mastriani, Don Bosco Prep, 152: Mastriani is by far and away the most impressive wrestler I’ve seen this year. He has offensive moves to spare and a motor that doesn’t quit. He throws in exciting moves you don’t think are possible and is incredibly quick to defend any attack. He’s got the perfect body type to wrestle at 152–strong, compact, agile–and the perfect mindset to win a tournament. And that mindset is outwardly humble and inwardly confident. I would love to see him and Deeb wrestle at states. In fact, I wrote a few months ago that that is the match I most wanted to see all year. If it happens, I think it will be for a state title or a birth in the state final. How amazing would that be.
